This workshop gives young people everything they need to know about puberty, what to expect and practical ways of managing and adjusting the many physical and emotional changes ahead.
How hormones influence when we start to go through puberty and how hormones can affect our mood. A short, animated video demonstrates the difference between puberty related mood swings and indicators of more long term mental health problems, such as anxiety, panic attacks or depression and strategies for managing our emotions and being able to ask for help with this when needed.
Periods: what they are, why girls have them, what’s available in the way of sanitary wear, including demonstrations with towels and tampons, and a short video from ‘Always’ explaining how the menstrual cycle works. Personal hygiene – dealing with body odour, skin changes, spots and acne as well as the awkward issues of random erections, wet dreams, body hair and the perils of shaving too soon without adult guidance.
Healthy lifestyles are discussed as diet, exercise and consistent sleep routines can all impact on our daily mood.
Pupils are encouraged to complete a worksheet whilst watching the workshop programme to help reinforce the learning outcomes.
